Cristal y Claudio Ortega was formed in 2024 in the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing Argentine tango to life with the warmth of an Argentine singer at its heart. The ensemble performs with dancers and listeners in mind, keeping the music warm, lively, and full of heart.
Born in Hong Kong, Crystie Shum began piano lessons at the age of four. In 2017, she fell in love with Argentine tango. Since then, she has studied with renowned maestros including Héctor Del Curto, Pablo Estigarribia, Nicolás Ledesma, Adrián Enríquez, and César Salgán, among others. She performed at the Stowe Tango Music Festival in 2022 and 2023 alongside special guests Víctor Lavallén and Guillermo Rubino. She has also performed in Buenos Aires, Tijuana, and multiple cities throughout Japan. Crystie is an active member of Alex Roitman Tango Ensemble (based in Florida) and Orquesta Tarareando, directed by Sasha Zeyliger (based in the San Francisco Bay Area). In 2024, she founded her own group, Cristal. Outside of music, Crystie works as a social worker and shares her home with three dogs, a parrot, a tortoise, and an iguana.
Pablo began studying bandoneon in 2020, inspired by Winnie Cheung. Since then, he has learned from wonderful teachers and mentors including Aude Bresson, Alexander Zeyliger, Melissa Bowman, Alex Roitman, and most recently, Rodrigo Avalos. He has also participated in workshops across the United States, learning from renowned Argentine tango masters such as Hector del Curto, Pablo Jaurena, and Julián Peralta.
Polina is a Russian-born violinist from Saint Petersburg who began playing at age four and made her orchestral solo debut at seven. Trained at the Special Music School and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, she later earned an Artist Diploma from the Longy School of Music. She has performed as a soloist across Europe and the United States with ensembles including the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra and Boston Virtuosi. After several years with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, she joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2009, where she is a member of the second violin section, and she also serves as Principal Second Violin at the Sun Valley Music Festival
Chris Johnson studied classical double bass at Cal State Northridge and later at The Boston Conservatory. He played with many orchestral and chamber music groups in Los Angeles, Mexico, and Boston. In 2009, Mr. Johnson moved to Buenos Aires to study tango bass with Juan Pablo Navarro. In the Bay Area, he plays with Seth Asarnow y su sexteto típico and continues to explore musical possibilities across genres.
Claudio, born and raised in Buenos Aires, has been bringing the soul of tango to life in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005, when he founded his ensemble Trío Corazón al Sur, captivating audiences with his heartfelt performances ever since. He has shared the stage with many of tango’s most respected artists and ensembles, including Tangonero Orchestra, Hugo Wainzinger, Trío Garufa, Trío Tangazo, Scott O'Day Trio, Sexteto Cristal, Charles Gorkzynsky's West Coast Ensemble, and pianist-arranger Yazmina Raies, performing everywhere from the Los Angeles Ford Amphitheater to Pacifica’s Mildred Owen Concert Hall, the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, and countless intimate milongas.
Mr. Carbone spins exclusively Golden Era tango on original vinyl, sourced from South America, Europe, and Japan. With one of the most complete tango record collections in North America, he crafts tandas in the spirit of the great orchestras—designed exactly as dancers love to move.
Daria Nikolaeva and Barry Hashimoto have danced together in Berkeley for over three years and have 47 years of combined experience in Argentine tango. Together they are multiple-time ATUSA finalists. Daria is a two-time Pista finalist and an Escenario finalist at the Mundial de Tango in Buenos Aires, and was among the first to teach tango in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she taught for more than a decade. Barry founded the Dartmouth Argentine Tango Society in 2005. Their early development was principally shaped by Jorge Dispari, Julio Balmaceda, Carlos Gavito, Daniel Lapadula, and Graciela González.

Feeling Flow: Hosted at a historic heritage house in Palo Alto, we are inspired to help people experience flow through dance, yoga, meditation, and related arts, and give them basic tools to translate this experience into other areas of life. Flow is a state of awareness where we are completely immersed in what is right in front of us. It is a highly satisfying state that facilitates well-being and growth. Art, in essence, is a form of self-discovery and a connection practice. It is said that the best way to know yourself is through the mirror of relating to others.

We highly recommend dance shoes or can you dance in socks. We request no street shoes on the dance floor.

To keep things streamlined we request you to register through this website at least 2 hours before the event. But, come nonetheless, the door pricing may be expensive and in case the event sells out we will have to sadly turn you back, this has happened in the past.
